Your Family History May Be Telling You Something

A genetic risk factor called Lp(a) may explain why heart disease runs in families. See if the OCEAN(a)-PreEvent Study is right for you.

What Is Lp(a)?

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a type of cholesterol-carrying particle found in the blood. Unlike standard cholesterol levels, it’s determined largely by genetics. High Lp(a) levels contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries and increase cardiovascular risk.

How Is It Related to ASCVD?

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) occurs when plaque narrows or blocks the arteries. Because Lp(a) has properties that make it more likely to attach to artery walls, elevated levels may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events.

What Will the Study Evaluate?

We’re exploring whether targeting elevated Lp(a) may help reduce the risk of future heart disease in adults before a major cardiovascular event occurs. Researchers hope to better understand the role of Lp(a) in the risk of inherited heart disease and to evaluate a potential investigational treatment.

Who Is Eligible to Sign Up?

You may qualify if you are a man or woman age 50 or older, have elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) levels, and have certain cardiovascular risk factors or evidence of plaque buildup in your arteries. Individuals who do not know their Lp(a) levels may be eligible for testing during screening. Additional eligibility criteria apply and will be reviewed by the study team.

What Does Participation Involve?

Participation begins with a brief questionnaire and screening process. Eligible volunteers may undergo Lp(a) testing and additional study evaluations. If enrolled, participants will attend scheduled study visits and receive the investigational study medication or placebo at set intervals.

Might I Receive a Placebo?

Yes. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the investigational treatment or a placebo. A placebo contains no active medication but is administered in the same way as the study drug. This process helps researchers accurately evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the investigational therapy.

What You Should Know About the OCEAN(a)-PreEvent Study

Currently, 1 in 5 adults worldwide have elevated Lp(a) levels, but there is no approved medication to target this risk factor for heart disease.

By joining the OCEAN(a)-PreEvent Study, you may contribute to research that aims to better understand heart disease risk and elevated Lp(a).

By Enrolling in This Study, You May Receive:

  • Study-related visits with a clinical research study team.
  • The study drug or placebo, administered every few months during the treatment period.
  • Reasonable reimbursement for travel-related expenses, if eligible.
  • The study drug or placebo provided at no cost.

Have an elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) level.

If you don't know your Lp(a) level, that's okay. The study team will run an Lp(a) test as part of screening if you're eligible to move forward.

Have a history of blockages in arteries without an artery-related event (e.g., heart attack or stroke), or are considered at risk of developing heart disease.
